Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry

Message from Head of the Department

Pharmaceutical Chemistry deals with chemistry of materials used as medicine or in the formulation of a medicine. Chemistry in turn is the study of structure, properties and transformations of materials. All three branches of Chemistry, viz., Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry are the components of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, including their qualitative and quantitative analysis. Traditional to advanced methods of analysis of pharmaceuticals are taught here.

In initial semesters, students learn about structure, composition and properties of carbon and non-carbon compounds. Midway through the program they are introduced to Medicinal Chemistry that deals with medicinal properties of chemical substances in humans. In the final semester, students have the option of learning CADD, Computer Aided Drug Design which deals with building new drugs and testing their activity/toxicity using computer software.

The department is well augmented with relevant scientific equipments and trained teachers towards readying students for the dynamic field of pharmacy profession be it manufacturing or clinical. The department regularly arranges seminars, symposia and workshops to expose students and teachers to the latest developments in the field. We organize various co curricular activities too to ensure overall growth of the students.

Realizing our responsibility towards environment as the campus is located on the foot hills of Sahyadri, world’s fifth important biodiversity hot spot, department has started replacing all experiments with green alternatives.

The department is committed to deliver skills in: isolating drugs from natural sources; their synthetic modification; qualitative and quantitative analysis; impurity detection and quantification; developing newer and greener methods of synthesis and isolation and biological evaluation of the synthesized / isolated compounds.
